The making of "The Goat" mask [3]

Since I had never worked with this material before, I had to start somewhere.
So, after plying a little bit with the plastic, understanding a little bit better of how it worked, I was almost ready to start.

Before actually starting to mold the final form, the work had to be divided into different smaller parts or segments.

When playing with the plastic, I learned that if you heated two different parts of plastic to the molding point you could stick those two parts together, and it would fuse into one piece.
This was key a really important kind of knowledge, because it meant that I could divide the project into really small peaces and pot it all together just by heating them together.

So then I preceded to first dividing the mask in three "big" segments. The jaw, the face and the horns.

With all of this in mind I had to start somewhere, so I decided to start with the jaw.

In order to learn a little better how to make them, I started by looking at different pictures of jaws.
To make it easier to build I preceded by dividing the jaw into two parts, those would be two equal parts, the jaw would be divided in the middle, made by to equal parts. Than when the two parts would be partially made I would heat them together.

The making of "The Goat" mask [2]

While searching for pictures of skulls I got this mechanical idea, of making a moving jaw fixed to the main frame of the mask. So that when I spoke the mouth would also move, giving it a more "alive" look.

So at this point I had the basics of the idea ready. Now the next step would be to find a material that I could use to make this.

After searching a while I came across this material I once heard about, but didn't knew what it actually was or where to get it.

Each square is 1x1cm
This material is called Polycaprolactone (PCL) also known as Polymorph Plastic. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable polyester with a low melting temperature of about 60°C (140°F). Which meant that I could heat it with boiling water and mold it into the shapes I wanted to. So I bought it and was ready to start.

Blog Update

This is just a simple blog update;

I want to inform that "The making of "The Goat" mask" weekly series will be posted every Friday at 7-AM (London time).

This project is still being made, but it is close to the end. And I have been taking photos of most if not all of the project stages.
Because of this I can write and prepare a post days or even weeks before I upload them.

The reason that I don't just poor everything at once, or do it everyday, is because I like to be able to look at them a couple of times before posting them. But most importantly because the project isn't done.
Some things in this project take a really long time to do, and are very repetitive. I don't want to share and or make very repetitive posts. By this I mean that I do not intend to post more than on post per part even if it take a lot of time and work to do, just like the stuff you can see in the YouTube videos, I don’t want to make two or three different post about rolling the same wire around the horns, even though that takes allot of time to do. And than by trying to avoid it leave a big (time) gap between posts, never knowing when a new one comes out.

Also I want to sate that I will try to keep posting other stuff besides this series. Still letting the faces from within talk, and possibly different things. I just have to find some time for it.

The making of "The Goat" mask [1]

In the beginning I started with a concept, an idea of what I wanted. A rough sketch. So I draw it, but I kept in mind that it wasn't the definitive one.

I think that, when you do a project, you should keep an open mind, because ideas may change and normally they changes for the better.

I searched on the Internet for pictures of skulls so I could draw over it. I also drew a rough sketch on paper beforehand.

The horns in the pictures above are round and going above themselves. I knew I wanted "goat like" horns, but wasn't sure how I wanted them. One of the things was about if I should make them spiral above or beneath the point where they start.

The making of "The Goat" mask [Preface]

The making of "The Goat" mask, will be a new weakly series

The posts will have pictures and texts that show and explain how and why each part of the process was made.
The process might not be the easiest nor the best way to do it, but I will show the way I did it.
If you have any question feel free to ask them, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Every week there will be a new photo or photos and text explaining them, and what was done from the previous photo to that one.
